Home pneumonia assistance teams are non medical lay people with minimal equipment and knowledge to supplement medical professionals in times when medical professionals may not be able to support all instances of pneumonia to the level normally expected.

They do not make clinical decisions, but apply equipment which is rare in the community(for example, high quality thermometers, pulse oximetry, and blood pressure monitoring) along with basic advice for interpreting those results, to assist people caring for pneumonia cases in the home which may be normally treated in hospital.

This allows increased surveillance of cases in the community and paramedics, community practitioners and hospital admittance staff to make better decisions, given a longer and higher quality set of results.
